WhatsApp, the instant messaging platform owned by Meta, has been continuously improving its security features. In addition to the Chat Lock functionality introduced earlier this year, WhatsApp is now reportedly testing a new secret code feature. This feature will allow users to have even more control over their locked chats, enhancing the security of sensitive conversations.

According to WhatsApp features tracker WabetaInfo, the upcoming secret code feature will enable users to choose a custom password for their protected chat folder. This means that users will no longer be restricted to using only their fingerprint, facelock, or standard passcodes. The introduction of a custom password adds an extra layer of security to locked chats.

By configuring a secret code, users will be able to lock chats not only on their primary device but also on companion devices. This ensures that even if someone gains access to a companion device, they will still require the secret code to access the locked chats. This feature brings peace of mind to users, knowing that their conversations will remain private and secure regardless of the device they are using.

WhatsApp’s secret code feature aims to strike a balance between security and convenience. Users will be able to enter the secret code directly from the search bar of the app, making it easy and efficient to access their locked chats. To further simplify the process, WhatsApp suggests using a word or a simple emoji as the secret code for quick access. Additionally, users will have the flexibility to change or remove the secret code at any time.

The secret code feature is currently being tested in WhatsApp for Android beta v2.23.21.9, which is available through the Google Play Beta program. However, the feature is not yet available for beta testers and is expected to be released in a future update of the app. Screenshots of the feature have been provided, giving users a preview of what to expect.

WhatsApp’s continuous efforts to enhance security are commendable. The introduction of the secret code feature is another step towards ensuring the privacy and confidentiality of users’ conversations. With the ability to choose a custom password and lock chats on companion devices, users can have peace of mind knowing that their sensitive information is well protected. As WhatsApp continues to test and improve its security features, users can look forward to a more secure and private messaging experience.
