SiFive, a leading RISC-V processor design firm, recently introduced two innovative chip designs aimed at revolutionizing high-performance computing across various industries. The SiFive Performance P870 and SiFive Intelligence X390 chips were officially announced at a press and analyst event held in Santa Clara, California. These designs, based on the open RISC-V architecture, offer exceptional performance, low power consumption, and vector compute capability. With these processors, SiFive aims to provide a significant boost to data-intensive computing applications in domains such as consumer electronics, automotive technology, and infrastructure.

The SiFive Performance P870 is designed specifically for high-performance consumer applications and can also be utilized alongside a vector processor in data centers. This chip sets a new standard for RISC-V performance, offering availability in terms of instruction set architecture, high throughput, parallelism, and exceptional memory bandwidth. With a 50% peak single-thread performance upgrade compared to previous SiFive Performance processors, the P870 features a six-wide out-of-order core and a shared cluster cache that supports up to a 32-core cluster.

Building upon the success of its predecessor, the SiFive Intelligence X280, the SiFive Intelligence X390 chip is designed to combine AI and ML applications with hardware accelerators for mobile, infrastructure, and automotive applications. With its single-core configuration, the X390 offers a four-fold improvement in vector computation, thanks to its doubled vector length and dual vector ALUs. This leads to quadruple the amount of sustained data bandwidth. The SiFive Vector Coprocessor Interface eXtension (VCIX) provides companies with the flexibility to add their own vector instructions and/or acceleration hardware, enabling unprecedented performance enhancement.

By combining the SiFive Performance P870 and SiFive Intelligence X390 with a high-performance NPU cluster, SiFive offers product designers an agile and programmable solution for generative AI applications. This combined solution provides superior compute density, low power consumption, and exceptional flexibility for handling complex workloads. Little also highlighted SiFive’s progress in penetrating various U.S. government procurements. SiFive’s success in markets such as China, automotive, and more has been further amplified by the recent Arm IPO, which brought attention to the potential of alternative architectures. Despite export controls imposed on certain advanced chips, SiFive’s products are not yet restricted from being used by Chinese customers. This gives SiFive a significant advantage in the Chinese market, which is regarded as a hotspot for sales.
