One organization, Friend in Need India Trust (FIN), operating in an isolated fishing village called Kameswaram in Tamil Nadu, sought to explore the potential of ChatGPT in creating awareness, motivation, and community engagement towards sustainability goals. In collaboration with FIN, female staff members who lacked higher education but faced patriarchal attitudes at home embraced ChatGPT as a tool to aid their work and lives. The chatbot proved to be helpful, acting as a companion that remembered previous conversations.
One staff member used ChatGPT to engage in political debates with her husband leading up to the state elections. She sought objective information about her preferred candidate and their opponent, but the chatbot’s responses proved equally convincing, resulting in confusion rather than clarity. This limitation raises concerns about the veracity and accuracy of information provided by ChatGPT. In fact, the creator of ChatGPT, Sam Altman, and other tech leaders in the United States have called for regulations to prevent AI systems from generating false information that may trigger social tensions.
Continuing the experimentation, FIN tested ChatGPT’s potential in addressing several pressing social issues. Communal violence, including honor killings in India, remains a significant problem. ChatGPT exhibited the ability to produce persuasive arguments against such acts, highlighting its potential as a speech writer to promote positive change. However, it also became apparent that the technology could easily be exploited by those seeking to maintain the status quo and justify violent behavior. This underscores the dual nature of AI chatbots as both promoters of positive change and facilitators of harmful ideologies.
Recognizing the importance of women’s empowerment, FIN asked ChatGPT to create a speech explaining the relevance of International Women’s Day to the villagers. While the speech proved impressive, it contained factual errors regarding sex ratios, abortion of fetuses outside legal limits, and women’s participation in the workforce. When confronted about these inaccuracies, ChatGPT apologized and cited the use of hypothetical statistics to illustrate a point. This highlights the potential for misinformation and incomplete information when relying solely on the chatbot’s responses.
FIN also sought ChatGPT’s assistance in addressing pollution resulting from traditional festivals in India. With the use of firecrackers and parties, air and water pollution levels soar during these events. ChatGPT quickly generated a skit featuring local characters and highlighted the environmental harm caused by microfibers from synthetic clothing. The skit was further enhanced by the FIN staff’s input, adding local nuances and humor. This experiment demonstrated ChatGPT’s value in promoting behavioral change and raising awareness, especially when combined with human creativity and local engagement.
While ChatGPT proved to be a valuable tool for well-intentioned NGOs, it raises concerns when it comes to individual users lacking the means to monitor the ethics and truthfulness of its suggestions.
