However, with the increasing prominence of generative AI, there has also been a surge in scrutiny and concerns regarding its potential risks. This has led several countries to take action to protect consumers, with Italy becoming the first Western country to temporarily block ChatGPT on privacy grounds. Other G7 countries are now considering a coordinated approach to AI regulation. The UK, in particular, is planning to host the first global AI regulation summit in an effort to establish responsible guidelines for the development and adoption of AI technologies.

While regulation is focused on ensuring the safety of AI, it often overlooks a deeper issue: AI bias. AI bias, also known as “algorithm bias,” occurs when human biases infiltrate the data sets used to train AI models. These biases, which can include sampling bias, confirmation bias, and biases related to gender, age, nationality, and race, compromise the independence and accuracy of AI technology. As generative AI becomes more sophisticated and its applications expand, addressing AI bias becomes increasingly urgent. There have already been instances of AI bias that raise concerns about the technology’s reliability and fairness. When OpenAI’s Dall-E 2, a deep learning model for creating artwork, was asked to generate images of Fortune 500 tech founders, the majority of the pictures it produced were of white males. Similarly, questions about influential people of color in popular culture stumped ChatGPT, casting doubt on its knowledge in this area. In a study on mortgage loans, AI models designed to determine approval or rejection were found to provide unreliable suggestions for minority applicants. These examples highlight how AI bias can perpetuate and amplify biases related to race and gender, leading to potentially serious consequences for users.

AI bias stems from the data on which AI models are trained. If the data over-represents or under-represents certain populations, the AI will replicate and exacerbate those biases. It is therefore crucial that businesses recognize that AI itself is not inherently dangerous, but rather the dangers lie in the data used to train it. To capitalize on AI’s potential while minimizing bias, organizations must prioritize greater access to data for internal and external stakeholders. Modern databases play a crucial role in managing large amounts of user data, quickly identifying and remedying biases when discovered. By enhancing visibility and manageability over datasets, the risk of biased data going undetected is significantly reduced.

Fostering Inclusivity and Transparency

Moreover, organizations must train data scientists to curate data effectively and implement best practices for data collection and cleansing. Making data training algorithms “open” and accessible to diverse groups of data scientists helps to identify and address inherent biases. Similar to the concept of “open source” software, appropriate data should also be made transparent and available for scrutiny.

Addressing AI bias is an ongoing process that requires constant vigilance. Organizations need to adopt techniques from other industries to ensure general best practices. For example, incorporating “blind tasting” tests from the food and drink industry, red team/blue team tactics from cybersecurity, or traceability concepts from nuclear power can provide valuable frameworks for tackling AI bias. These approaches help organizations understand AI models, evaluate potential outcomes, and build trust in these complex and evolving systems.

In the past, talk of regulating AI seemed premature, as its societal impact was still uncertain. However, the advancements in generative AI and the development of tools like ChatGPT have changed the landscape. National governments are now working together to regulate AI, while also vying for leadership in AI regulation. It is crucial that AI bias is not overly politicized, but instead viewed as a societal issue that transcends political boundaries. Governments, data scientists, businesses, and academics worldwide must unite to address AI bias and ensure fairness and inclusivity in AI technologies.
