In a bid to enhance user engagement on its platform, WhatsApp, the popular messaging service owned by Meta, has introduced a new feature called WhatsApp Channels. With the intent to create a one-way broadcast tool, these channels enable users to share updates with a wide audience within the app. This exciting addition is currently being rolled out in India, alongside other countries. While users can actively search for channels established by their favorite content creators, businesses, or celebrities through a directory, they can also react to messages broadcasted by the channel owners. The announcement regarding the introduction of WhatsApp Channels in 150 countries, including India, was made by Mark Zuckerberg, the Co-Founder and CEO of Meta, on his personal channel. To stay updated with the platform, users can join the official WhatsApp Channel as well. It is worth mentioning that both Instagram and rival platform Telegram already feature similar one-way broadcast functionalities.
To incorporate the newly introduced WhatsApp Channels feature, iOS and Android smartphones will display a fresh tab called Updates. This tab will provide users access to WhatsApp Status messages as well as the WhatsApp Channels feature. Moreover, users can utilize an enhanced directory that filters channels based on their country and showcases popular channels based on follower count, activity level, and recently established channels. To join a WhatsApp Channel, users require a valid invitation link. In order to prioritize user privacy, the app will not disclose the phone number of the channel creator. Furthermore, members of a channel will remain hidden from one another, ensuring their phone numbers remain undisclosed.
The Functionality and Security of WhatsApp Channels
Messages sent through WhatsApp Channels will be visible for a span of 30 days, following which they will expire. While channel members have the ability to react to the shared messages, they are unable to respond to them directly. It is important to note that messages broadcasted through channels do not benefit from end-to-end encryption. However, WhatsApp emphasizes that other forms of communication, such as direct messages, group chats, calls, status messages, and attachments, will remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
To garner widespread popularity and drive engagement for the new WhatsApp Channels feature, Meta has teamed up with the Indian Cricket team and renowned celebrities like Diljit Dosanjh, Neha Kakkar, and Katrina Kaif. These influential personalities have already established channels on the app, acting as early adopters of the feature. Additionally, WhatsApp has announced its plan to enable any user to create a channel in the coming months, opening up the opportunity for businesses, content creators, and individuals to connect with their respective audiences on a larger scale.
