Three Democratic members of the Senate Committee on Armed Services have raised concerns about SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s potential involvement in disabling or impeding the function of Starlink satellite communications terminals used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in southern Ukraine in 2022. In a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Elizabeth Warren, and Tammy Duckworth expressed their serious concerns about whether Musk had personally intervened to undermine a key U.S. partner. This inquiry comes in response to allegations made in a recent biography of Musk by Walter Isaacson.

According to Isaacson’s book, Musk ordered a disconnect from Starlink, causing a disruption in a Ukrainian drone submarine attack on Russian warships. The excerpts from the book raised alarm bells in Washington, among NATO allies, and in the Ukrainian capital. Musk, however, denied disconnecting Starlink over Crimea and argued that he had refused a request by Ukraine to provide connectivity in the area.
