Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and the owner of the social media platform X, found himself engaged in a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over accusations of antisemitism. The conversation took place at Tesla’s offices in Fremont, California and was livestreamed on X. Musk vehemently defended himself against the allegations of antisemitism, stating his stance against hate and conflict in any form.

Musk’s Conflict with Anti-Defamation League

Musk’s clash with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish civil rights group, has triggered this controversy. He alleges that the ADL has been undermining X’s advertising revenue and contributing to the rise in extremist content on the platform. The ADL, along with other civil rights watchdogs, has expressed concerns about the increase in extremist content since Musk took over X and fired most of its staff. The tense situation escalated when Musk threatened to sue the ADL and supported posts on X with the hashtag “BantheADL.”

Netanyahu’s Perspective

Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed hopes that Musk would work within the boundaries of the First Amendment to combat antisemitism and hate speech. However, he acknowledged that addressing this issue was not an easy task. Netanyahu, who was visiting Silicon Valley before the United Nations General Assembly in New York, aimed to demonstrate that he is still a prominent figure in the tech industry, despite the ongoing political unrest in Israel. His attempts to weaken Israel’s judiciary have sparked protests and damaged his reputation as a pro-business leader.

Musk’s Approach to Hate Speech

Musk acknowledged that X receives an overwhelming number of posts on a daily basis, ranging from 100 million to 200 million. He recognized the challenge of trying to filter and police content in advance. However, he assured Netanyahu that steps could be taken to reduce the amplification of hate speech. Musk stated that X would not promote hate speech as it is not what people would want to hear. Although Musk previously claimed to be a supporter of free speech, he explicitly denounced all forms of antisemitism.

AI Potential and Netanyahu’s Visit

Netanyahu’s visit to Silicon Valley was primarily focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and Israel’s potential in this field. He held discussions with Musk and emphasized Israel’s status as a robust democracy. Netanyahu also expressed his intention to reform the judiciary, which he believes is overly activist, in order to strike a “happy middle” between its power and the need for change. The prime minister showcased Israel’s AI potential by touring a Tesla factory and experiencing a ride in an autonomous vehicle.

Before the meeting, an Israeli official traveling with Netanyahu clarified that the discussion with Musk was not influenced by the recent antisemitism controversy. The official stated that Netanyahu does not view Musk as someone who holds antisemitic views. During the conversation, Musk proposed a solution to prevent the amplification of hate speech by requiring a small monthly payment on the X platform. This payment model would significantly increase the cost for bot operators, making it less financially viable for them.

The discussion on AI also involved OpenAI, co-founded by Musk, and its commitment to protecting user privacy. OpenAI’s President, Greg Brockman, noted that the company prioritizes user privacy and faces pressure to uphold ethical standards, particularly in the area of privacy. He emphasized the contrasting views people often have regarding privacy, as they desire it for themselves but are willing to compromise it for others. OpenAI has implemented various privacy safeguards, such as data encryption and a commitment not to use customer information for its technology development.

A Ongoing Relationship

Netanyahu and Musk have maintained contact since 2018 when the Israeli prime minister hosted Musk at his Jerusalem residence. They share common interests and concerns regarding the potential risks and benefits of artificial intelligence. Netanyahu’s spokesperson confirmed that the two have discussed emerging technologies multiple times in the past through phone conversations.

Elon Musk’s discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu provided an opportunity for Musk to address the allegations of antisemitism leveled against him. The conversation also touched upon Israel’s AI potential and the need to maintain ethical practices in the development and deployment of AI technologies. Despite the controversy surrounding Musk, there seems to be an ongoing relationship between him and Netanyahu built on shared interests in technological advancements.
