Google, the technology giant that transformed the way we search the internet, is currently facing its most significant legal challenge in a Washington court. Accused by the US government of acting unlawfully to establish its overwhelming dominance in online search, Google is now embroiled in a landmark antitrust case. With over ten weeks of testimony and more than 100 witnesses involved, the company is determined to persuade a federal judge that the allegations brought by the Department of Justice are baseless. This trial represents the most significant antitrust case against a big tech company since the department took on Microsoft over two decades ago.
Rigging the Game of Search

The Microsoft case, initiated by Washington in 1998, ultimately concluded with a settlement in 2001 after an appeal overturned the order to split up the company. The case against Google was launched during the Trump administration and carried over into President Joe Biden’s tenure, demonstrating a continued focus on challenging the power of tech giants.
Despite the ongoing legal battles, it remains uncertain what tangible outcomes President Biden’s challenges against tech giants will yield. In addition to the current antitrust case, the Department of Justice has launched a separate investigation into Google’s advertising business, which may go to trial next year. Moreover, the company faces additional lawsuits from US states, alleging monopolistic practices in ad tech and anticompetitive behavior in the Google Play app store. Recently, Google and the states announced a preliminary agreement to settle the Google Play case, signaling a potential resolution.
