The highly anticipated fantasy game Lords of the Fallen is facing a wave of criticism from Steam players. Despite its strong debut on the platform’s top seller charts, user reviews for the game are overwhelmingly negative. With over 1,300 reviews at the time of writing, players are voicing their frustration with various technical problems, such as low frame rates, stuttering, and crash bugs. These issues are certainly not what players expected for a game fresh on the market.

One aspect of the game that has received some positive feedback is its performance in certain instances. A few users have praised the “buttery-smooth” gameplay, which stands out from the overwhelmingly negative reviews. However, overall consensus seems to suggest that the technical aspects of the game are lacking, aligning with concerns raised in our own review. We found performance to be subpar, with frequent frame drops even on lower settings. It’s worth noting that the review build we experienced was constantly being patched during our playthrough, indicating that the developers, Hexworks, were aware of these issues and actively working to address them.

Guidance for Players

To help players navigate the game’s technical challenges, Hexworks has compiled a guide to minimize the occurrence of the most severe bugs. The first tip advises players to utilize the “auto-set” option under the graphics tab. This feature aims to optimize the game’s settings for smoother performance. Additionally, the second tip recommends updating graphics drivers to the latest version. This simple step can often resolve compatibility issues and improve overall stability.

For players still encountering technical difficulties, a more advanced solution is provided as the third tip. By following a specific set of instructions, players can delete a particular file in the game’s Saved folder, then verify the integrity of the cache through Steam. While these steps may be straightforward for experienced gamers, their effectiveness in resolving the game’s issues remains uncertain.

However, Hexworks and publisher CI Games are not leaving players empty-handed. They have set up support channels for players to report bugs and provide diagnostic files. Players can send a diagnostics file and a GPU Debugging Log to the support team at CI Games via email. The log can be accessed by entering the command “-gpucrashdebugging” in the Steam settings and locating the log file in the game’s Saved Logs folder. Furthermore, players can utilize the pop-up crash notification to report crashes directly to the Lords of the Fallen’s bug database.

A Tale of a Kingdom in Need

Despite the technical hurdles, Lords of the Fallen is still receiving some praise for its RPG elements. While it may not be the genre-defining game some were hoping for, it does offer moments of a grand adventure. Our own review highlighted the potential found in the game’s narrative, with glimpses of a kingdom in desperate need of purification.

The initial reception of Lords of the Fallen on Steam has been challenging. The game has faced significant technical shortcomings that have impacted the overall player experience. However, the developers have shown dedication to addressing these issues through frequent patching and offering guidance to players. It remains to be seen if these efforts will be enough to salvage the game’s reputation among disappointed players. As for those brave souls who persevere through the technical woes, they may find a hidden gem within this grotty fantasy world.
