WhatsApp, the popular messaging service owned by Meta, has recently been making waves with its latest development. Reports have surfaced that WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow chat interoperability, enabling users to communicate with individuals who are not on the WhatsApp platform. This move comes in response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which will take effect in the first quarter of 2024. Under this new regulation, major platforms like WhatsApp are required to offer interoperability for chats with users on other services.
The latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android smartphones has unveiled an interesting addition – a new section for third-party chats. This feature was discovered by the WhatsApp feature tracker, WABetaInfo. Although the section currently appears empty except for the title at the top, it signifies that WhatsApp is still in the early stages of implementing this new functionality.
The third-party chat section is not yet visible to users and was found in the code for WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.19.8. While the exact workings of this feature remain unclear, such as whether conversations from third-party services will be integrated into the main chat list or if notifications for third-party apps will appear alongside regular WhatsApp chats, it is exciting to see WhatsApp exploring new avenues of communication.
It is important to note that WhatsApp’s development of the third-party chat section comes just six months before the EU’s DMA regulations regarding chat interoperability come into effect. According to these regulations, platforms with at least 45 million monthly users in EU countries or those with a market capitalization of EUR 75 billion (roughly Rs. 6,67,100 crore) must provide their users with the ability to chat with other messaging platforms and services.
However, the timeline for implementing such a significant change appears to be rather ambitious. The regulations not only require chat interoperability but also demand that these chats be protected by end-to-end encryption. This poses significant security challenges for Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, and could also lead to a lengthy development process. In fact, Meta announced in 2019 its plans to merge the messaging experiences across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook to facilitate communication between users, yet the company has not fully implemented encrypted messaging across all its platforms even after three years.
The introduction of chat interoperability in WhatsApp’s upcoming update has the potential to reshape the way we communicate. By allowing users to connect and chat with individuals on various messaging platforms and services, the boundaries between these platforms will begin to blur. This move not only benefits the users themselves but also promotes healthy competition among messaging services, fostering innovation and improved user experiences.
However, while the concept of chat interoperability seems promising, it also raises concerns about privacy and security. End-to-end encryption is crucial to protect the confidentiality of conversations, but implementing this security measure across multiple platforms is no small feat. It will require rigorous testing and careful consideration of potential vulnerabilities.
