While some of these images offer comedic relief, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s face superimposed on Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry, recent developments indicate a more unsettling trend as digital fakery becomes malicious. The prevalence of deepfake images has raised concerns about privacy, revenge porn, legal implications, and even the integrity of democratic processes.
Deepfake technology has already demonstrated its potential to harm individuals and society at large. Actor Tom Hanks recently took to social media to denounce an ad that used his AI-generated likeness without his consent to promote a dental health plan. Even popular YouTubers like Mr. Beast have fallen victim to deepfake manipulation, with false claims shown in videos. Furthermore, ordinary citizens are facing the unauthorized use of their faces in images on social media.

As the United States approaches a highly contentious presidential election in 2024, the potential for forged imagery and videos promises an election of unprecedented ugliness, undermining trust in electoral processes.
The proliferation of deepfake images also poses a significant threat to the legal system. Lawyers are increasingly challenging evidence produced in court due to the public’s confusion over what is real and what is fake. This phenomenon, known as the “liar’s dividend,” allows individuals to deny reality and raises serious concerns about the reliability of evidence.
Major tech companies, such as OpenAI, Alphabet, Amazon, and DeepMind, have pledged to develop tools to combat disinformation. One promising approach is the use of watermarking on AI-generated content. Watermarking adds unique identifiers to images, making it easier to distinguish between real and manipulated content. However, a recent paper published by professors at the University of Maryland raises concerns about the effectiveness of watermarking techniques. The study revealed easy workarounds to circumvent watermark detection algorithms, rendering current methods unreliable in identifying deepfake images.
Although watermarking approaches may falter in the face of sophisticated attacks, experts remain cautiously optimistic. Soheil Feizi, one of the authors of the University of Maryland report, acknowledges the challenges but believes that the development of robust watermarks is not an impossible task. As the cat-and-mouse game between creators and detectors continues, it is crucial for individuals to exercise caution and due diligence when reviewing images that hold significance for them.
