Late Friday night, X, formerly known as Twitter, bid adieu to its famous blue and white bird logo and replaced it with an “X” icon on its mobile app. This change is part of a sweeping rebranding initiative announced earlier this month by the platform’s owner, Elon Musk. While the logo has been introduced on the web and X.com has been launched as a domain, Twitter.com remains live for now. Musk, who acquired Twitter for a staggering $44 billion last year, shared his vision of turning the platform into an “everything app,” which led to this transition.

The introduction of the new X logo on top of X’s headquarters in San Francisco has triggered an investigation by city officials. The Department of Building Inspection filed two active complaints regarding the “Structure on roof without permit” and “Unsafe sign.” According to the department’s website, a city official had visited the building and requested access to the roof, but was denied and informed that the structure was a “temporary lighted sign for an event.” As of now, both the Department of Building Inspection and X have yet to respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Musk’s Fascination with “X”

It comes as no surprise that Elon Musk is fascinated with the letter “X.” His rocket manufacturer, SpaceX, also features an X in its logo. Furthermore, Musk recently launched a new artificial intelligence startup called xAI, with the ambitious goal of understanding the true nature of the universe. It is clear that Musk sees great potential in this enigmatic letter.

While Musk’s vision for an “everything app” is ambitious, undoing the years of branding behind Twitter’s blue bird poses significant risks. Business analysts argue that this move could further hinder the platform’s struggle to retain advertisers. Some fear that Musk’s changes to the site have made it an unsafe place for brands to market their products. To address these concerns, Musk recently hired Linda Yaccarino, a former NBCUniversal advertising executive, as CEO of X. This strategic move is seen as an effort to reassure advertisers and regain their trust.

In an email to X employees, Linda Yaccarino expressed her excitement for the future of the platform. She stated that X would develop experiences in video, audio, messaging, banking, and payments that would delight users. Yaccarino also emphasized her and Musk’s commitment to keeping the entire community up to date by working closely with every team. With this rebranding, X aims to provide users with a comprehensive and enjoyable app experience.

As X emerges from the shadow of Twitter, it embarks on a new era under Elon Musk’s leadership. The transition from Twitter to X represents Musk’s vision of transforming the platform into an “everything app.” While challenges lie ahead, including concerns from advertisers and ongoing investigations, the strategic appointment of Linda Yaccarino as CEO demonstrates X’s commitment to addressing these issues. With ambitious plans for future experiences, X aims to captivate users with its video, audio, messaging, banking, and payment services. The days of Twitter’s blue bird are now in the past as X sets its sights on a bold and exciting future.
